Garage Sale Freebies

The house up the street from where Rich lives had a garage sale two weeks ago. We noticed the signs around the neighborhood and noted the time and date. When Saturday rolled around, not only did my alarm fail to go off, I snoozed my second alarm without even knowing it! When we were finally up and ready, there wasn't really much of a point in going as neither of us were carrying cash...womp womp!

As Rich and I drove past the garage sale, we contemplated about stopping to browse but didn't as they were already packing up. We went around our day running errands and grocery shopping and on our way back, noticed that there was a whole slew of garage sale left overs on the curb! I've heard of people leaving unsold items on the curb for others to take, but I've never seen it happen or taken from one.

This time though, boy am I glad I did! I felt a little like a raccoon rummaging in a pile of stuff at sundown, but I didn't care. I even brought a flash light. Rich ended up driving the car up to the driveway, because there was so much to bring back and lagging it home wouldn't have been very much fun. Plus, the two reusable shopping bags I took with me just wasn't enough. Ha!

Take a look at what we snagged!

Ikea place mats (like new, similar to these) x30 or so, silicone whisk, sharpening steel and a candy/deep fry thermometer

Made in Germany by J.A. Henckles, twin signature that works like a charm

Oyster shucking knife from keeponshucking, coincidentally with the name Richard engraved into it! This cleaned up really well.

Canape bread tubes, which usually cost about $20-$30/set. I'm excited to use these!

A pair of round cake pans and three loaf pans

Three rimmed sheet pans. I'm loving the vintage/used look of these. Even after a good scrubbing they look great.

A pair of ramekins (made in England), white flower bowl and three shot glasses (the other is tinted violet)

Two bundt pans

A pair of melamine bowls, perfect for serving snacks, vintage ice cream scoop (which I later broke), sundae glass and a glass carafe

A set of Italian dishes, plates and serving bowl

I am in love with the print!

Made in Italy by Nuova Fontebasso. Any Italians know anything about these? Google isn't telling me much. A seller on Ebay is selling a plate like the one above for $15 a piece, but I'm keeping these.

A metal platter, two dessert glasses and a white porcelain serving dish.

Pretty good finds, I think! They're things I'll put to good use one way or another. I'm thrilled about the J.A. Henckles sharpening steel as it works wonderfully sharpening my knives. Cutting through meat is effortless, as the weight of the knife itself will do the work for me. Slicing tomatoes isn't much of a task anymore and no one will miss using a serrated knife when cutting a load of bread!

Many of the items, especially the metal/bake ware needed some extra attention. Luckily, I keep a good stock of baking soda and dish soap in my house! I just made a paste, used a little steel wool, some elbow grease and the items ended up looking fantastic. They're now super clean, yet still have their vintage look to them which I adore!
