I love pomegranate season! They're fun to eat and they aren't bad for you. Plus, if you're a deal hunter like me, you can score them for 50¢ a pop! Poms are such a yummy snack; like sweet and tangy little rubies. Here's how I get the seeds out without spanking it or drowning it in a bowl of water.
All the tools you need, plus your hands |
Carve an inverted cone shape around the top. |
Cut the bottom flat, about an inch up |
Score the fruit lightly, where the "bumps" are top to bottom. This is where the fruit naturally opens. |
Slowly open the pomegranate up with your thumbs and voila. Perfect segments full of seeds and no broken seeds! |
You can eat it just like this, in a cluster |
...but I don't like clusters. |
I gently pushed the seeds from the "pith". You can see the bare pomegranate skeleton in the back. |
Ta-da! So easy! |
Try it! As someone who believed in the "beat the seeds out" method, ever since trying it out this way- I've been converted. Just ask Rich. He can tell you about the time he whacked the back of the fruit as hard as he could to get the gems out, only to hit is finger. To tell you it hurt would have been an understatement! :D
