Cranberry Sauce with a Hint of Orange

I served this cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving dinner and it was safe to say that a lot, if not everybody enjoyed it! My dad was raving about it on and on talking about how it would great simply slathered on a piece of toast. I even made a roast chicken a couple days later so we could eat the cranberry sauce, kind of like a mini post-Thanksgiving dinner. We like poultry. :)

The sauce was ridiculously simple to make and was very budget friendly!

Orange juice, 50¢/carton |  Bag of cranberries, $2  |  Sugar $2/bag
..but we're not going to use all the orange juice or the sugar! So basically, it'll turn out to be $2.50 for
a giant bowl of cranberry goodness. It totally beats buying a can in terms of flavour and $$$.

Start off by rinsing the cranberries and dumping them into a medium sized pot. Add in a cup of sugar and a pinch of salt.

Depending on how orange-y you like it, add orange juice and/or water to equal 1 cup total.

Set the stove on medium high and let it boil!

The berries will start to pop and break down, kind of like this.

After about 10 minutes, it'll look like a nice chunky sauce and it'll taste delish.
But don't go spooning it in your pie hole! You'll burn the crap out of your mouth and cry. You're welcome. :)

Scrape every last bit out of the pot and into a bowl, chill and serve.
The best thing about this recipe, is that you can make it days in advance! Don't you just love it when you can make things ahead of time?? I LOVE IT.

P.S. If you're feeling a little bit fancy and happen to have an orange sitting around, zest it and add it in to the sauce!
I did.

Cranberry Sauce with a Hint of Orange

To make this, you'll need...
1 bag (12oz, 3cups) cranberries
1 cup white sugar
1 cup orange juice and/or water (I used 50/50)
Pinch of salt
Optional: zest of an orange

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a medium pot
  2. Set the stove on medium high and boil for about 10 minutes, stirring every so often
  3. Transfer into a bowl, chill and serve.
